Industrial and management systems engineers focus on productivity and quality improvement. They looks at the "big picture" of what makes society perform best--the right combination of human resources, natural resources, and man-made structures and equipment. Professionals in this field bridge the gap between management and operations, motivating people in addition to determining what equipment, computers, etc., should be used and how they should be used.

The Department offers a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering; master's degrees in industrial engineering, industrial hygiene, and safety management; and Ph.D. programs in industrial engineering and occupational health and safety. Our faculty work extensively with students in such areas as communication skills, personal growth and development, creation of summer internship opportunities, a senior capstone project experience, and permanent job opportunities. Employment Outlook

Historically, most industrial engineers started their careers in manufacturing facilities but this trend has been changing. Today about half of our graduates are employed in the service sector while the other half begin their careers in manufacturing. View employment outcomes.

Drawing from the University, College, and Department missions, the needs of our constituents, and ABET engineering criteria, the following educational objectives were developed.

Industrial Engineering/Industrial Hygiene Program Objectives

Graduates of the industrial engineering/industrial hygiene programs will be prepared to:

  1. Practice industrial engineering/industrial hygiene, and to initiate and develop leadership roles in business, industry and/or government.
  2. Continue professional development and life-long learning.
  3. Interact in society and business in a professional, ethical manner.
  4. Be proficient in written and oral communication and to utilize people-oriented skills in individual and team environments.
  5. Apply the skills from Industrial Engineering to be proficient in his/her chosen field or graduate studies.
Safety Management Program Objectives

Graduates of the safety management program will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including the transmission of safety data to management and employees.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the area of safety management.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and professional responsibilities and knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to apply various research activities through the decision-making process used in safety management.
